Dr. Paul Wise, MD, MPH, a core leader at the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, has been awarded the 2025 Clifford G. Grulee Award by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). This honor, the highest recognition bestowed by the Academy, was established in 1951 to celebrate exceptional service to the AAP and its mission to promote the health and well-being of children.

Dr. Wise is seen with Dr. Susan J. Kressly, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics, celebrating this remarkable achievement.

Dr. Wise’s selection for the Grulee Award celebrates his exemplary commitment to safeguarding the health of children in conflict and low-income settings, as well as his significant contributions to the Academy.

Dr. Wise has devoted his career to improving the lives of vulnerable children, following a formative experience volunteering at a children’s hospital during Guatemala’s civil war as a college student, where he witnessed children dying of malnutrition. As a faculty member at Stanford since 2004, Dr. Wise has combined research and humanitarian efforts spanning public health and international policy. As the Juvenile Care Monitor for the U.S. Federal Court, Dr. Wise has played a crucial role in overseeing the treatment of migrant children in detention, ensuring that their rights and health needs are met. His global efforts include supporting community and child health programs in Guatemala, evaluating systems of treating injured civilians in Iraq, and helping evacuate children facing catastrophic diseases from war zones such as Ukraine and Gaza so that they may receive appropriate care.

Dr. Wise, who is also Stanford’s Richard E. Behrman Professor of Child Health and Society, received the award on Sept. 29 at the AAP National Conference held in Denver, Colorado.
